Enacted in 1988, the Biosphere Reserve El Vizcaino is a protected area that is located in the northern state of Baja California Sur. With more than two million hectares it is one of the largest natural reserves in the world. The Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons are located within the reserve and provide annual sanctuary for gray whales, which arrive in the region for their breeding season. The reserve covers a wide range of ecosystems, from deserts to coastal mangrove lagoons, to oak and mesquite forests.
